Japanese AV idol who appeared in over 100 adult videos in the early 1990s before crossing over into mainstream television. She became a national TV personality on shows such as Gilgamesh Night and wrote the best-selling semi-autobiographical novel Platonic Sex (2000), which sold over 1.7 million copies and was adapted for film and television. Later a prominent HIV/AIDS-awareness activist, she retired from entertainment in 2007 and died in 2008.
