American pornographic actress who appeared in nearly 200 films from the mid-1970s, including Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle (1981), and became known in the 1980s for feminist and sex-positive pornography. She later became a noted performance artist and certified sexologist, and in 1996 became the first known porn star to earn a doctoral degree. She was inducted into both the AVN and XRCO Halls of Fame in 1999.
